US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has said it will sell its erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra to the world's largest generic drug maker as part of a massive merger with Pfizer Inc. Pfizer's US pharmaceutical giant is expected to lose its patent protection in the next few years, after it was forced to cut its revenue from the sale of Viagra.
Pfizer, which made Viagra available in 50 mg doses, said it had "deep pockets" in the world's most profitable pharmaceutical company, which has made a significant number of Viagra, which it sold to rival Pfizer.
Pfizer is seeking to build a strong, diversified global presence, while also developing a new generation of blockbuster drugs, which could create a lucrative opportunity for Pfizer. Its US operations are based in the United States, but Pfizer plans to make a profit of $1.1bn (£900m) by the end of the year.
Pfizer's $1.1bn revenue is thought to come from sales of Viagra, which the company is already making available to consumers.
Pfizer is still cutting its revenue from Viagra, the company said, after it was forced to cut its sales of the impotence drug by as much as a third in the US.
The company had previously said it would make Viagra for patients only when they were in their 50s and 60s. It has cut sales of Viagra and Levitra, the latter of which is made by Bayer, to sell for less than $5 a pill.
Pfizer is expected to make its own generic version of Viagra, called Sildenafil, in the next few months, after it is told it will "continue to make Viagra for patients who are eligible".
A Pfizer executive said it had not reached an agreement with the US government and it was "disappointed" that Pfizer has cut $200m in revenue from Viagra.
Pfizer CEO Ian Read has said the merger was the "largest single transaction for a pharmaceutical company since the 1990s, and could be the start of a new company with new facilities, new medicines and new brands".
A spokesman for Pfizer said: "We are committed to making progress in Viagra and we are confident that we can achieve that."
Pfizer's shares fell 2.5 percent in afternoon trading after it said the new company was "ready to launch its new products".
Pfizer has also been criticised for running into criticism that it had overstepped its boundaries by cutting a key patent on the drug.
Pfizer's US patent on Viagra expires in 2014, and its patent on Levitra expires in 2019, with patent expiry in November 2019, according to the patent office.
In November, Pfizer said it had received "multiple reports of counterfeit products" on its website, including "spam, counterfeit drugs and drugs which contain nitrates", which are widely used to treat angina.
Pfizer also said it was "continuing to manufacture and supply Viagra" and that it was "reviewing the safety and efficacy of the Viagra brand".
Pfizer is the world's largest-selling drug company, which accounts for about 70 per cent of worldwide sales.

The Russian military says it is using Viagra to increase its own effectiveness, but its doctor, who is not authorized to speak on the record, has also warned against its sale in a country that has strict regulations on the sale of medications.
The Russian medical media have reported a possible use of Viagra in the wake of the military's training on the border. It was the only approved medication in a study in February by the Russian State Agency for Food Security, which was set up in 1989.
The US Food and Drug Administration has since issued a warning, which states that the sale of Viagra may pose risks for the safety of the public and for any person suffering from impotence, as well as for those with heart disease or those taking certain drugs for purposes not listed on the label.
The Russian authorities are also worried about the potential for the sale of Viagra to anyone in the country who has been diagnosed with diabetes, or who has high blood sugar levels.
